As the holiday season unfolds, a prominent name in the legal industry is making headlines for its significant bonus offerings to associate attorneys.
DLA Piper, one of the top three law firms in the United States, has announced an enticing structure of financial incentives, including special bonuses that complement the substantial year-end bonuses previously unveiled by leading firms like Milbank.
Financial Success and Generosity
With an impressive revenue of $3.83 billion in 2023, DLA Piper proudly secured its place as the third firm on the Am Law 100.
This success allows the firm to be generous in rewarding its associates, demonstrating a commitment to acknowledging hard work and outstanding performance.
Bonus Eligibility Criteria
At DLA Piper, the criteria for bonus eligibility are multifaceted.
Factors such as seniority level, productivity—which includes a target of 2,000 billable hours—performance ratings, compliance with firm policies, and overall standing are crucial in determining who qualifies.
This year, associates who meet the default market-level bonuses can also anticipate additional special bonuses for exceptional contributions.
In what many consider promoting a positive atmosphere, DLA Piper is set to reward associates who have surpassed expectations, particularly those who have logged a remarkable number of billable hours and provided exemplary service to their clients.
An internal memo highlighted the specifics of the bonus structure, which includes:
- Associates who receive performance scores of four or five will find that their bonuses reflect that distinction.
- Those who exceed the standard 2,000 billable hour target can look forward to incremental bonuses for every additional 100 hours worked, with a cap at 2,700 hours.
Distribution Timeline
For those who meet their billing goals by December 16, the firm has planned to distribute both year-end and special bonuses by December 27.
Additionally, enhanced bonuses for this group will be released on February 7, 2025.
Associates who fulfill hour requirements by December 31 will receive all their bonus payments on that same date.
Kudos to everyone at DLA Piper for their dedication! This season of giving certainly highlights the firm’s efforts to recognize its associates’ hard work and commitment.
