On Monday, a powerful joint operation by INTERPOL and AFRIPOL marked a significant step in the fight against terrorism in East Africa, culminating in the arrest of 37 people suspected of connections to extremist groups.

This extensive operation not only detained these individuals but also seized a cache of weapons, including small arms and heavier ordnance, which are thought to be associated with notable terrorist organizations like ISIS and Al Shabaab.

Key Arrests and Suspects

Among those apprehended, three suspects were captured in Somalia.

One is an alleged explosives expert, while another is linked to Al Shabaab—a notorious affiliate of al-Qaeda responsible for several devastating attacks, including the infamous 2013 Westgate Mall assault in Nairobi, Kenya.

Meanwhile, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), four suspected members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) were taken into custody.

This group has a disturbing history marked by severe human rights violations, including accusations of child abduction and sexual violence against innocent civilians.

Operational Success and International Cooperation

The achievement of this operation can be credited to meticulous investigative methods combined with real-time data analytics employed by officers from both INTERPOL and AFRIPOL.

Leaders from these organizations highlighted the success of their collaborative strategies, indicating that this operation exemplifies the potency of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

Cyril Gout, the Acting Executive Director of INTERPOL, expressed optimism about the operation’s results, emphasizing how they signify the positive outcomes that can stem from global partnerships in combating extremist threats.

Likewise, Jalel Chelba, the Acting Executive Director of AFRIPOL, underscored the vital importance of such international collaborations in addressing security challenges.

Broader Impact and Future Initiatives

Conducted across eight countries in East Africa, this operation fell under the auspices of the INTERPOL Support Programme for the African Union related to AFRIPOL (ISPA), which aims to bolster AFRIPOL’s capabilities in confronting global crime and terrorism.

This is not the only effort INTERPOL is engaged in within the region.

The organization is actively pursuing several anti-terrorism initiatives, including the INTERPOL East African Community (I-EAC) project, which is focused on fostering peace in the area and complements other INTERPOL efforts to tackle various security issues.

Through these concerted actions, the international community demonstrates its resolve to curb terrorist activities and protect the safety of East African nations.
