The recent death of Robert Brooks in custody has sparked widespread outrage, particularly after the release of video footage showing correctional officers assaulting him.

The New York Attorney General’s office unveiled these recordings on Friday, which were captured via body-worn cameras at Marcy Correctional Facility.

Before this footage was made public, both Brooks’ family and the Attorney General’s office carefully reviewed it.

Investigation Initiated

New York Attorney General Letitia James initiated an investigation on December 16, assigning it to the Office of Special Investigation (OSI).

By December 21, she highlighted the pressing need for accountability within law enforcement, reaffirming her dedication to transparency for the citizens of New York.

Details of the Incident

At the time of his death, Brooks was serving a 12-year sentence for first-degree assault, having been incarcerated since 2017.

The day he was brutally attacked, he had just been transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility to Marcy Correctional Facility.

Footage from the incident reveals Brooks, while restrained in handcuffs, being taken into a medical examination room where he faced a severe beating.

After several agonizing minutes of violence, he appeared to lose consciousness.

Tragically, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital in the early hours of December 10, 2024, following the violent clash late on December 9.

Responses and Consequences

In light of the disturbing video, Governor Kathy Hochul ordered the immediate termination of the 14 correctional officers involved.

She emphasized that the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has a fundamental responsibility to protect the safety and well-being of those in their custody, stating that any lapse in this duty is unacceptable.

Rev. Al Sharpton, the president of the National Action Network, described the footage depicting Brooks’ death as profoundly unsettling.

He drew parallels to prior instances of violence against Black individuals involving law enforcement.

In his response, he expressed gratitude for the quick actions taken by state officials and voiced hope for justice for Brooks and his family.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing, with authorities diligently working to piece together all relevant information.

As of now, no legal proceedings have been initiated.
